A fever abroad Art Toys spread throughout Brazil around 2007. Art Toys, or designer toys or urban vinyl. They are toys made of plastic, vinyl or cloth, created by visual artists, illustrators, comic artists, graffiti artists or fashion designers. The trend started among toy collectors and art collectors and today is a consumer trend.
To reflect on this new form of artistic expression Bitsmag editor Beth Ferreira and Matias Max, journalist and owner of La Cucaracha, toy art store in Rio de Janeiro, had the initiative to create a contest and a customized toy art exhibition. The Batalha de Toys exhibition showed a reflection on this art trend, with presence of artists with very different visions but who, like almost everyone today, fell instantly in love with the toys.
